Frequently Asked Questions

I’m a developer who wants to purchase a HoloPlayer One. What do I do?

HoloPlayer One is ready and available for immediate shipment now. Keep in mind that the HoloPlayer One is different from the Looking Glass. The Looking Glass is a next-generation system that is now also available for pre-order here with the earliest units shipping out in January 2019.

Can I see a HoloPlayer One in person before purchase?

Of course! We host events, Meetups, workshops and attend conferences all around the world. We also have an open door policy in our Greenpoint, Brooklyn and Hong Kong labs. To schedule a time to come in, email future@lookingglassfactory.com.

Do I need a computer to run HoloPlayer One?

The Development Edition of HoloPlayer One requires a PC or Macbook Pro. While we recommend that your computer have a graphics card for the best performance, a high performance gaming laptop is absolutely not needed to get into the hologram game with a Holoplayer. For reference, we’ve run most of sample applications at greater than 30FPS on computers with specs as low as Intel Core i7 processors without a dedicated graphic card. If you have questions about whether your PC or Mac is a match for the Development Edition of HoloPlayer One, ask us at future@lookingglassfactory.com!

The Premium Edition of HoloPlayer One comes with a premium casing and built-in Intel Nuc computer for standalone operation without a separate computer. Of course, the Premium Edition can also be connected up to your own PC or Mac with included cables if needed.

Is HoloPlayer One just a Pepper’s Ghost system?

No! HoloPlayer One is fundamentally different from all of the Pepper’s Ghost illusions you might have seen and we think it’s closer to the full dream of the holographic interface we’ve been promised by decades of sci-fi movies. The 3D worlds generated by Holoplayers (1) float above the glass and not behind it, which means you can interact directly with the 3D content with your bare hands, and (2) those 3D worlds are actually three-dimensional, rather than the 2D reflections found in most Pepper’s Ghost systems.

I’m not a developer, should I buy a HoloPlayer One?

All intrepid hologram explorers welcome! We should tell you that the HoloPlayer One is a more advanced lightfield display and at its current technological point, offers lower resolution than the Looking Glass — a system we recently launched on Kickstarter on July 24, 2018. However, we still encourage those who want to explore new advanced technologies in holograms to get their hands on a HoloPlayer One. That all said, the HoloPlayer One isn’t a plug and play product and is more like the first generation of personal computers or 3D printers, designed for very early adopters — so if you’re still not sure if this is right for you, email Shawn or Alex and they’ll be happy to chat.

I can’t wait to start making things in HoloPlayer One. How can I get a head start?

YEOW! We like you! You can download our HoloPlay SDK and start making applications with Unity right away, no Holoplayer hardware needed. Duncan from the team wrote this Getting Started guide for the HoloPlay SDK to get you up and running in no time.

What have people made with HoloPlayer One so far?

Dozens of sample applications, ranging from HoloBrush (kind of like Tiltbrush, but without VR/AR headgear), HoloSculpt (a way to sculpt and 3D print a digital piece of spinning clay), games like 3D Asteroids and Holoperation, HoloDancer (an impossible cabinet of curiosities), CT scan importers, the first ways to rig a 3D digital character directly in real 3D space, Amazon Alexa weather apps, experimental 3D ultrasound imagers and even more experimental versions of a Holocommunicator video program… but we believe these are just the tip of the iceberg of what’s possible with this fundamentally new interface.

Come join our community and make something amazing!

Do you make bigger HoloPlayers?

We have some systems in our labs but they’re not ready for release yet. Do you have a project in mind? We’d love to hear it. Email future@lookingglassfactory.com with subject: I WANT BIGGER HOLOPLAYERS to get our attention.

The floating image in HoloPlayer One is a little blurry, do you have something crisper I can buy right now?

We do! It’s called the Looking Glass and is currently available for pre-order starting at $499 + shipping! We think that the Looking Glass is a starter system for all 3D creators around the world to start easily making and porting things into a truly three-dimensional display that affords them 45 stereoscopic views in a living space. We are super excited to share this system with the world and can’t wait till you see it!

It’s hard to tell based on the 2D videos on this website, but are those “holograms” really floating above the surface of the Holoplayer?

YES, those moving 3D worlds are absolutely floating above the top surface of the Holoplayer. When your finger touches, say, the tip of an X-Wing, your finger is actually coinciding with the digital 3D tip of that X-Wing in real meatspace. Skeptical? We’d love to meet you and have you play with a Holoplayer in person! Email Shawn at smf@lookingglassfactory.com to come by one of our labs or meetups and see for yourself! The dream of the hologram that we’ve been promised in Minority Report and Star Wars and Iron Man is not only possible — it’s here.
